The few natives that became converts,
joined with Christians, and being merged into the community were called
kalas, because in the opinion of the Burmese, they had embraced the
religion of the Kalas and had become “bonafide” strangers, HAVING LOST
THEIR OWN NATIONALITY. This is a strange and somewhat startling fact,
but the writer has had numberless opportunities of ascertaining the true
opinion of the natives on this point. How often he has heard a Burman
Speaking of one of his countrymen, willing to become a Christian, ” he
wishes to become a Kala”. Indeed, with the people of these parts,
religion and nationality are so intimately connected, so thoroughly
blended together, that they form one and same whole. Religion cannot be
forsaken without giving up nationality, and in other words, the fact of
embracing the religion of another people, is equivalent to becoming a
member of the same social or political body.
